Licorice Root Tea

This is one of my favorite herbal teas.It is available in tea bags, but is also made  by pouring boiling water over the dried roots. It has a sweet, pleasant taste and can replace sugary beverages for those wanting to reduce sugar intake. The licorice plant grows naturally in Southern Europe and Asia. It contains alot of anti-oxidants and provides many health benefits.I enjoy combining it with camomile tea.

Benefits of Licorice Root Tea.

It is mainly used for coughs and colds.
It can be used as an expectorant.
It helps with respiratory problems.
It protects the stomach lining so it can benefit people who are taking medications for the stomach.
It relieves indigestion and acid reflux.
It functions as a mild laxative.
It can help against hepatitis.
It can help in cases of depression, anxiety and nervousness by encouraging the function of the adrenal glands.
It relieves pre-menstrual tension.
It boosts the immune system.
It can help lower cholesterol.
One of its components, glabridin, has anti-cancer effects, especially for breast cancer, as it inhibits the movement of cancer cells.

Risks of Licorice Root Tea.

Licorice root tea shouldn't be used every day or in large doses. It also should not be used  by people with hypertension. It is not considered suitable for pregnant women. Licorice root's main component is glycyrrhiza, which can cause high blood pressure if used for an extended period of time. It is also contra-indicated for those suffering from heart problems and kidney disease.

Preparing Licorice Root Tea.

Licorice tea can be made with the tea bags or by boiling the dried licorice root. If preparing it from the root,  boil the water and then add the root. Let the tea steep for a while before discarding the licorice root and drinking it.

Storing Licorice Root.

Packets of the dried licorice root should be stored away from heat, light and moisture and the licorice root will keep its flavour indefinitely but if it is exposed to dampness, it will become mouldy.
