Flax Seeds and Flax Seed Oil.

Another product that I use regularly with beneficial results is flax seed oil, which comes from flax seeds. Both the seeds and the oil are effective and are taken internally. They are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for cell membranes. The seeds are more commonly used but I tend to use the oil more than the seeds.

Benefits of Flax Seed Oil.

It is beneficial for the lining of the intestines and calms inflammation.
It is a natural laxative.
In conjunction with a good diet, it can help reduce high cholesterol as well as the risk
 of cancer and heart disease.
It improves blood-sugar levels for diabetics.
It helps in the maintenance of healthy hair, nails and skin.
It prevents dry-eyed conditions.

Risks of Flax Seeds and Flax Seed Oil.

Caution is required when using flax seeds or
flax seed oil if taking medication.
In this circumstance, it is better to seek
professional health care advice.

Taking Flax Seeds and Flax Seed Oil.

Flax Seed oil can be taken in a liquid or capsule form. Some recommendations are to take a tablespoonful daily but being naturally cautious, I prefer to take between a teaspoon and desertspoonful mixed with natural yoghurt due to its famous laxative effect. However, some claim that the seeds are a more effective laxative than the oil. If taking the seeds, it is very important to grind them first otherwise they will pass directly through the digestive tract and the effects of their nutrients will be lost. Make sure the grinder is clean and dry before use. 100% certified organic flax seeds are best ones to buy.

Storing Flax Seeds and Flax Seed Oil.

It is usually necessary to keep liquid flax seed oil in the fridge as it is easily destroyed by heat, light and oxygen. After the seeds have been ground and are therefore open, or if they are in powder form, they will become rancid at room temperature so they should also be stored in the fridge, preferably in a glass container.
