What is Chayawanprash?

To lead an active life, you need to stay fit and well which includes avoiding those winter coughs and colds. As a busy person myself, I was happy to discover Dabur Chayawanprash, a herbal tonic in the form of a sticky, brown paste. It is widely consumed as a dietary supplement in India. Derived from a 2,500 year-old formula, it can contain between 25 and 80 herb and plant extracts in a base of amla, which is a very rich source of vitamin C. The recipe for Chayawanprash appears in Ayurvedic manuscripts, but the original recipes have been altered and some ingredients have been changed, probably due to the availability of herbs. It has been prepared with different compositions that have different advantages. The taste Chayawanprash is a mixture of sweet and sour.

The Amla Berry.

The amla berry or Indian gooseberry, is the base of Chayawanprash. This berry grows well in warm climates and contains many nutrients. It is a very rich source of vitamin C. One small amla berry has as much vitamin C as two oranges. The amla berry also contains iron, zinc and vitamin B complex and carotenes.
