Herbal Teas and Infusions.

I have always loved drinking tea, especially during the winter, and I have become interested in the many health benefits of herbal teas and infusions.It is always better to buy teas made from organic leaves or flowers. Please note that the following recommendations apply only to teas and juices and not to the related supplements which I do not use.




Organic Hibiscus Tea.




Hibiscus tea is a drink that people around the world enjoy hot or cold. Hibiscus grows in warm regions of the world and the tea is usually made ​​from the calyces, or the bulbous part at the base of the hibiscus flower. It is crimson in color and has a tart flavor, similar to cranberry. Hibiscus tea is a herbal tisane and does not contain caffeine. In some cultures, it is used as a mild medicine. There are more than 300 species of hibiscus, but the  hibiscus sabdariffa  which is also used to make a juice known as 'bissap' in West Africa and the Caribbean, and hibiscus rosasinesis are known to have health benefits.

It helps to reduce blood pressure.
It can help those who have type 2 diabetes, balancing sugar levels in the blood.
It contains a higher concentration of anti-oxidants, which help cleanse the body of free radicals, than green tea. Anti-oxidants also reverse the effects of aging.
It reduces inflammation.
It protects against arthritis.
It boosts the immune system.
It improves circulation.
 It promotes respiratory health.
In Africa, hibiscus has been applied topically to the skin for skin conditions.

Risks of Hibiscus Tea.


Hibiscus tea should be avoided by pregnant women as it is a stimulant for menstruation and drinking it can result in a miscarriage. It should also be avoided when trying to conceive. Hibiscus tea lowers blood pressure and therefore should not be consumed by people who have low blood pressure.


Storing Hibiscus Tea.




Hibiscus tea can be purchased as tea bags or as packets of dried flowers. If prepared from dried flowers, it is best drunk immediately. The flowers can be used over again until their bright,red color fades. Bissap juice is best kept in the refrigerator after it has been prepared or if purchased in a bottle, after the bottle has been opened.
